Well it isn't everything we need, but I was still astounded to see it. As most of us know Lyme Disease has never been considered disabling by the Social Security Administration but...Social Security disability has a new addition to their categories to what they consider as disabling conditions.

Most lyme patients have to look at the categories and list and line up their disabling condition by symptoms.....you really still do. Here are there categories: http://www.ssa.gov/disability/professio ... stings.htm

BUT did you see the new category???

I was in awe to see they added on June 16th "immune system disorders" and example given is Lyme Disease under
Inflammatory arthritis...wow! Look at 6 B's list here under immune system disorders. This category also helps people with Lupus too, this is good news I think:

hmmm, maybe I could even get my "fibro" doc to help me out with this, seeing as he thinks I have fibro, lupus, Ra and scleroderma

Any advice given by me, is just that, advice. I am not a medical doctor, and I suggest you talk to your doctor about any concerns.

Lisa, you'd qualify for SSD even better than SSI. SSI is for people who have never worked. SSD is for people who have worked and they figure your monthly disability based on the last several years of earnings....also makes no difference what your spouse's income is AND if you get SSD you get Medicare insurance and part D prescription coverage. If you have kids under 18, they send you even more money. Parents that are disabled w/kids get an extra check for support of the children.

For those who have never worked they would apply for SSI, if they are awarded benefits in the end they automatically qualify for Medicaid.

You can also collect both. If you qualify for SSD and have little or no savings, you would get an extra check from SSI.

Jaime - your kids would get benefits - children of disabled parents receive monthly checks too...yes you should absolutely go for it.

It is a hard process, you will likely be turned down the first time, that is how the weed out the sick from the not so sick and appeal..a doctor's letter stating your symptoms is extremely effective along with any medical records. In the end if you are awarded disability, you are back paid to the date you say you became disabled.

Jaime - you could say you became disabled many years ago...whenever you got sick .....like I said if you are awarded the benefits in the end, even if you have to appeal several times, your first check is for all the years past you were disabled. Imagine that!
