Danny is on flagyl - the gum he chews contains Sugar alcohols, does anyone know if this is the same "alcohol" that would make one sick on flagyl?

I have heard even mouth wash can make you sick on flagyl ... but it does contain real alcohol.
Anyone? I can't find the answer.

I have never gotten sick from gum. I have been on Flagyl since Sept. I have had little trouble with it. The first week I herxed, but got over it. It does leave a metalic taste in your mouth at first, but your body adjusts. I think they mean consumption of alcohol like a beverage.

Thanks Merilyn. Do you chew sugar free gum? It seems to be a sweetner of some kind. I am wondering if this ingredient is not in non-sugar free gum.

I'm not sure what sugar alcohol is but my Dr. said that when I go back on Flagyl someday that I wouldn't be able to "cheat" on my diet with sugar. So maybe too much sugar is bad with Flagyl?

I'm sure they mean drinking alcoholic drinks. But I'm sure being cautious of sugars as well is a good idea. I can't imagine poor Danny eats much sugar, lately he eats not much of anything. I say, if the gum helps him (sometimes it helps me with nausea), then it will be alright. If he has problems on it, then maybe switch kinds. I really don't know what "sugar alcohol" is.

Sugar Alcohols = http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whatto ... cohols.htm

Experience: Laura has been developing health and education Web sites for over 10 years. She was a writer and cancer support provider at Mediconsult.com, and has taught classes and written health articles for young people. She has been focusing on low-carb and low-glycemic eating for over a decade -- investigating the emerging science related to low-carb eating, writing articles to help people change their diets, and developing healthy menus and recipes.
Education: Laura has an B.S in physical therapy from the University of Vermont in Burlington, an M.A. in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology-San Diego, and several years of doctoral work in clinical psychology.

While Danny is so highly symptomatic, I would cut it out so that you can 'read' his other symptoms clearly. In time, he can reintroduce it.
This is what we've had to do for Heth - often. When in doubt, cut it out for a time. It helps with process of elimination.

DANNY SHOULD NOT BE CHEWING SUGAR FREE GUM. It is bad bad bad for you. It has some bad stuff in it. bad bad bad.

aspartame .. Phenylalanine ....

I avoid it at all cost. It can give you some wicked wicked symptoms. BAD BAD STUFF. can you tell how I feel about the subject?

I truly believe that it gave my cousin a deadly brain tumor.

Diana thanks for a great link, I searched but couldn't find one.

Jennifer - no it isn't sugar free, but I was wondering if all gum contained artificial sweeteners, I guess it does. Wow, sorry about your cousin.

If it contains aspartame it will say so on the warning label on the package of games.

Hi Friends,

Yesterday, I went out to lunch with a friend for my birthday and we split a tiramisu for dessert. After I ate it, it dawned on me it have had alchohol in it. My friend thought it did. So I went home and looked it up on line and sure enough -- Olive Garden does put 3 oz of brandy or rum in their cake.

Nothing happened to me. Maybe the dose of flagyl I am on is not very strong? Maybe the amount of liquor was low? I don't know, but I wouldn't be too afraid, Danny, if you are not a drinker. Be careful, though.

well I imagine that once it's cooked, it may not have that much alcohol in it. I still wouldn't eat anymore just to be safe.

I thought that at first too, but I am not sure you bake it. You soak the waffer in it. I can look that up on the site I found olive garden's ingredients.

OK I looked it up. No baking. when you put it together, you refrigerate it.

I think the heat "burns off" the alcohol when used in cooking....where is Jamie, she is the cook around here..she'd know I bet.

Chewing gum helps Danny's burning sensation in his chest, we bought gum that had no mention of alcohol of any kind and it is Wrigleys and no reaction w/Flagyl.

I remember my husband was on Flagyl once and the day after stopping had a beer, he was sick for a week, I mean REALLY SICK. He rarely if ever has a drink of anything, yet he chose the day after he stopped Flagyl - you are suppose to wait at least 3 days after you stop.

Thanks girls.
