Good question. I hope someone who has done IV will answer.
Did you get your PICC line already?
How are you feeling today?

Keep us informed Julie, I need to know all this myself.

Dana

I seem to be the only one who doesn't have a picc or port. My LLMD says insurance won't pay for it and they are very expensive. Basically she wants me to come in as often as possible for IV. She wants me at least 3 times a week. Obviously, this is not ideal since I have to drive there and I have children etc. But it doesn't seem like there is much other choice. I don't get the whole thing.

She also said that after a few times I start to herx that then insurance might be more likely to pay for the port. I have to read up on the picc/port thing cause I don't get which is cheaper and which I should do. So for now, all I am doing is going in the office and sitting there with the IV bag.

Another option is that I could go to a LOCAL LLMD (mine is an hour away) just for the IV....I would be considered a transfer patient and they could just do it there...that way I still have MY LLMD but wouldn't have to drive that far....

I would love some advice :) As of now I go back Saturday. Julie

actually julie, your doing it the way I would choose to do it... I wouldn't want a picc or port, I'd rather just do an IV once or twice a week. How long is she planning on doing this with you? 3 times a week to have an IV put in seems like a lot. I really don't know that much about IV so I can't really answer your questions... but I think being woozy would be somewhat normal...I mean, IV drugs are stronger, so I would think if you're sensitive to drugs, it might make you feel different

Any advice given by me, is just that, advice. I am not a medical doctor, and I suggest you talk to your doctor about any concerns.

That is the way I WANT to do IV!! No PICC or Port! I love it!

Your insurance may not cover it because (I am guessing) you weren't CDC positive? Igenex positive, they don't care.

I prefer the way they are doing it. Do they just put the IV into your wrist area or in the area inside the elbow where blood is drawn?

Seriously - this is the safest way! I'd be happy with one infusion per week and orals. But I know 3-4 infusions a week normal protocol.

Can you continue to do it this way indefinitely?

How are you feeling now?

Dana I feel so much better about it now - I didn't think it was going to be worth it to do it this way because everyone always acts surprised when I say no picc or port.

I imagine if you would like to even have one IV per week, that I should be fine with 2 or 3 for now.

I may have missed a thread or two (or 50 ) but what is the status with your IV? :) J

I am holding it up...why? Because I might be allergic to Rocephin. I had a minor reaction as a teen to Keflex (same class of abx) so now I have to go to a local doctor and do a abx challenge. They will basically give me 1/2 a pill from the that class, most likely Ceftin and I have to sit there 3 hours to see if I have any allergic response.

It is highly unlikely what I experienced when I was younger was a truly an allergic reaction. I do well on the penicillin's and that usually indicates you will be ok with the Cepholosporins...it is a long shot I'd be truly allergic. But I have to do the challenge then remain on that oral for a week.

After all that...I am likely going to go to an IV infusion center at a nearby hospital and do it like you have ...try it out really and see if I do ok. One day a week, I'd be totally happy with - but doing orals too. I mean one day a week seems safe and I know that might take longer, but this is a long haul anyway. I just feel if I start IV, knowing my tender body, one day is better than none. I really don't want a PICC line if I can help it either.

I just have to get to the doctor and sit there for 3 hours and start the challenge. Ugh..such a pain to go through.

But if I do ok, I seriously would be totally happy with one infusion per week. I know LLMd's will do this with patients that herx hard and I tend to on orals...but maybe I'd do better on IV, some do better on IV who have hard herxing on orals.

Just gotta get my rear in gear and set the appt now. :D

The best LLMD's use IV only 3 or at most 4 days per week...Mon, Wed, Friday is ideal that is is the way one LLMd does it that is very famous and then he has you take one week off all abx every month to rest the body and give the immune system a chance to regenerate. That is plenty and he has had good success.

Keep us posted! I am watching you! ha!ha!
