Post subject:  IV questions

So I am starting IV next week and I don't know any details except that it is supposedly only going to take about half an hour or so.

I have read about picc or port and I don't know which is which or what to expect. Will I have something stuck in my arm or something that i will have to keep on between visits? Or do they just stick me with a needle each time?

i don't care either way, I just don't get it and I didn't think to ask yesterday at my LLMD appt...

thanks Julie

Hi Julie,
A picc line runs internally in a vein from your heart to your bicep area, where a line comes out. A port is in the chest area - both remain in until treatment ends.

This a very good video on doing IV w/a picc line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8y0aoWR91DU

A port remains in the chest area, you have no line through your arm. But it looks like a lot of work, one woman that use to be a member here loved her port. It enabled her to swim, shower easily, etc. Here is a video on a port:

Hope this helps - neither looks fun, I know.

Hi, I have a PICC line but it is for me to do my own IV's at home. Sounds like you will be having your IV's done at your dr.s office? For that I don't know if you need a PICC, but if you are starting next week you would probably already either have your PICC line in, or an appt. to have it put in, as it is done as an in patient procedure under Xray.

Hope this helps; sounds like you may (if it is done once a week) be having an IV line put in each time.

Love, Amy

Amy, how long have you had your PICC line, and r you doing rocephin? Are you doing orals also. And for how long do you plan to have your IV? Can you see a big difference?

Yeah Julie, it sounds like you will have an IV put in every time you do IV treatment. But I would think it would take longer than half hour.! That's pretty fast. I believe you'll see a difference after the first treatment!!! I'm so excited for you!!!

I am not sure (Amy?) I think it takes about 2 hours to infuse 2g of Rocephin.

Are you serious?: I might see a change after one treatment???? OMG that would be amazing....

I do not know how often I will be going, but yes it will be at my LLMD's office, I am thinking once or twice a week, although she wants me to do more. She said it takes about half an hour - is she wrong? The secretary told me a few hours.

I guess i will see when I get there.

I am still afraid of the herx.....

but man if this gets to the neurological stuff, then I will do anything.

Thanks! Julie

I am doing 1 gram of cef per day, and I do an IV "push". (Different than a drip bag, in that you screw the syringe onto your PICC line and than push the med in a little at a time.)

First you push a saline flush, which some say you can do fast but it makes me dizzy so I go slow with this too. (Probably the saline takes me five minutes.)

Than when I do the cef., I push 1 mg every four minutes (I set a timer) so the actual medication takes me forty minutes. Than one last saline to clear the line.

So I allow myself a good hour. I read that with the push it is vital to go slow (also heard this from my LLMD nurse) because it is more concentrated and basically dumping right next to the heart.

Hope this helps. Love, Amy
