Post subject:  May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month! Know the Facts!

Make a point to educate someone this month about Lyme Disease! I have compiled a list you can print and give to anyone with links they can visit or you can print for them. Pass it through email and anyway you can - lets get people educated!

12 Lyme Disease Quick Facts

1). You are more than 10 times more likely to get Lyme Disease than West Nile Virus. Ticks are everywhere and you are most likely to be bitten in your own yard. Lyme disease is easy to get and may be impossible to "cure". It is found in ALL 50 states!!

2). Lyme Disease has surpassed AIDS as the #1 infectious disease in the U.S., it is the #1 vector (insect) borne disease, infecting at LEAST 1/4 MILLION people in the U.S. annually. Many go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. (Reporting is poorly documented & usually shows 30,000 per year, the CDC says this number is 10 times higher and up to 40 times higher due to poor testing and Md's not reporting it!

3). Testing for Lyme Disease is UNRELIABLE. To be tested correctly you must have your blood tested through a tick borne specialty lab such as Igenex Lab in Palo Alto.

4). Lyme Disease is passed many ways, ticks, all biting blood-sucking insects can be carriers. Other ways are congenitally, blood transfusions and sexually.

5). The average primary Md knows NOTHING about Lyme Disease & will try hard to convince you they do know - don't be fooled!

6). Lyme Disease, if not caught right after the bite can become chronic with multiple systemic (body-wide) symptoms that is extremely hard to treat. Evidence shows long term antibiotics, sometimes for YEARS & hope for remission is possible. Problem is, ticks are so small, many don't ever remember being bitten or ever develop the classic "rash".

7). You or someone you know has Lyme Disease and likely don't know it. It is the "great imitator" If you know someone with pain, back problems, knee problems, Fibro, anxiety, migraines and many other medical problems - you know someone with Lyme. There are at least 100 symptoms of Lyme Disease.

8). Only Lyme literate Md's treat Lyme Disease effectively, not found in your local phone book either. The Lyme Disease Association - and (contact link) can help you with Lyme doctor referral.

9). Lyme Disease enters the central nervous system almost immediately and even if you believe you are "cured" you can relapse many years later. Lyme Disease is a central nervous system infection with bacteria similar to Syphilis, but more virulent.

10). The symptoms of LD are so devastating it can be completely disabling with symptoms that mimic many diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, MS (w/brain lesions), Fibro, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and many more. Pain is common & can range from mild to excruciating. Symptoms may be minor from headaches, insomnia, etc. and are likely the cause of all these disorders!

11). Lyme Disease may be responsible for all psychiatric illness and the #1 cause of LD death is suicide.

12). Lyme Disease can kill.

Thanks..I could have gone on and on and made the list 50 facts. I did just change it some, so you might want to re-read it. The links are "proof" of the statements I listed.

The best way to email this or to post elsewhere, is to copy and paste the link to it here. You know I like that anyway when info is taken from here I want other's to know where it came from (you know that already about all my threads).

well, I just educated the heck out of a lot of people today! I printed this out, took it to the craft store when I went to buy lime green ribbons, passed some out there, and then went to sams club and passed more out, even ran into a guy who said he had it before, was treated and is alright...but was by mainstream, so of course I told him if he ever experiences symptoms to contact us here, and gave him my email as well! I wish I had a willing participant to video tape this all so i could add to the youtube experience, maybe I can do that later.

gonna take some to Kate's girlscout meeting too and pass out to the mothers.

ahhh, was wearing my tshirt that you sent me Dana, the same one you had on in the video, got lots of awesome comments on that too!

Awesome Jaime. I think if all of us did this - we cover a lot of ground. Someone will recognize the symptoms either in themselves or someone else.

Was the guy who had lyme treated recently? I hope he read #9. I am curious how long and what doses of abx he did. Did you ask by any chance?

Great job,

Good job ladies! I've got a infromation box (real estate box) in my front lawn with LDA's brochures in them and I made a page kinda like Dana's and stapled it to it. The has brochures you can order for free or download off your computer. They even have them in Spanish and they have them for kids and teachers.

My daughter handed them out at school with green ribbons for people to put on there lockers or purse. And I went to all the local businesses and they are handing out the brochures and ribbons too.

I emailed all the local newspapers and have had two interviews, one in the paper last week and another will be in a different paper next week. From what I've seen this Ribbons Across America project is really taking off. I saw on some other forums that people were not only gettng newspaper articles but also getting interviews on the news!

Are people actually taking them? That is a good idea.

There are some printable brochures in the links in my first post from ILADS.

All the links are the best I have found on "what" lyme disease is.

Again, great job!

Yes people are taking them and I handed them and more ribbons for the local businesses to hand out too. I also attached a bunch of links to different lyme websites (including this one).

I thought you ask questions to people by asking to be friends first. I hope Cog1st reads this. I am sorry I am totally new to this website. A girl told me @ it at web md. She said lots of Christians were here. I am embarrased I did that.

well I emailed a lot of newspapers and all the news station and haven't heard back from any of them! I can't beleive it, very disapointed.

but on a smaller scale, I ended up doing a garage sale and printed out about 25 of those, and talked to about 30 people about it over the past couple days, handed out the fliers, most were happy to take them and some were interested in asking me questions.

the sad thing is, my daughter , 7 years old , is actually more compassionate than anyone who walked thru our garage...well, not sad, I'm very proud of her, but it's sad these adults are so heartless. I have signs posted that money raised will be going towards lyme disease research, treatment and education, and I told people that too. I have some really nice things priced decently, like Tommy Bahama mens shirts, you know those $150 shirts, my mother in laws ex boyfriend knows the guy and he would give him these shirts, I have like $10 on them, maybe I should ebay them instead. and other stuff , NICE stuff, priced super cheap, jeans for a buck, etc, and people still trying to talk me down ridiculously, and walking out empty handed...I even have made some beautiful jewelry, worth much more than I'm asking for it.

so Kate says "mom if I was from a different family and saw the signs for lyme disease if I came here and I didn't want anything I would still donate money for it" WOW out of the mouth of a 7 year old darling!~ not one person has said "here's a dollar, I really don't want anything but it's a good cause" they are all so cheap..."will you take 30 bucks for this dresser, it's going to a good cause our grandson needs a dresser" it was a 300 dollar changing table dresser, hardly used...I took the 30 but felt like screaming at the trash and telling them "yeah, this is gong to a good cause of helping people, while you are wrapped up in your little world I've helped thousands of people find doctors and treatment opetions"!!

Jaime, That's so sweet what Kate said. What a mature little girl. This disease makes kids grow up way too fast!

Sorry the papers didn't write you back. Don't give up though. I got two articles and cant believe how many people are calling me that all have lyme disease in my little town.
