I get a magazine called "Natural Health" I'm sure you could go online to read articles in full online, but just breifly I saw some great benefits of probiotics many of us probably don't know about:

it says that if you have an immune system that needs support, it pays to boost it with probiotics, helps to eliminate bad germs and keep your immune system functioning and reduce inflamation. also can help relieve allergies and asthma and may even lift your mood by altering stress messages sent to the brain!

if you suffer from frequent colds, allergies or other conditions take a probiotic supp

the question arrised, can you take too much, it says your body will use all the probiotics you supply and is constantly exreting the bacteria thru your intestines, as a rule of thumb aim for 3-5 billion colony forming units daily, double that dosage to treat a specific concern such as travelers diarrhea or if you're taking antibiotics which destroy both good and bad bacteria in the body.

check out thier website, they always have awesome info!

Yes it is true and probiotics are immune system boosting because most of our immune system is in our intestines.

Probiotics when on abx require much larger CFU than they are recommending I think. I take 35 billion CFU and it so funny because I knew of saccharomyces boulardii (another probiotic) way back when LD started for me and I'd ask at forums and no one knew what it was. Now doctors are saying saccharomyces boulardii w/a good probiotic for us is a must.

In any case, when looking for a good probiotic, refrigerated ones are usually the best, look for many strains (it will say on the box or bottle) I use one with 14 strains. Also enteric coated is important so it opens in the intestines not the stomach.

Even 35 billion CFU doesn't seem that strong to me, we have trillions of good bacteria in our body getting eaten up by abx and a fighting immune system. If you are taking enough probiotics you will become constipated, but don't lower the dose, instead add magnesium and or vitamin c daily, that will get things moving.

Here is a link I put together a long time ago about probiotics for anyone wanting to know how to choose: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=19

Thanks for bringing up this subject, it is necessary to be reminded!

I agree with you Dana,

Heather takes 140 billion pre- probiotics each day. This is 'her' therapeutic dose. The Lyme had entered her gut; so bigger guns for bigger battles. That's not the norm for most, especially if detected sooner and still toting a strong immune system. We know it to be a huge benefit against the pathogens and other viral/bacterial invaders she has encountered. It has helped with her other protocol modalities that are intended to stimulate her NKC (Natural Killer Cells) as well. This keeps her colon replenished and moving, as well. Huge benefits.

Although we do not use this brand (b/c her docs have her on a higher grade due to her battle being a life or death for so long and the fact that her immune system was destroyed by the late diagnosis) their research is excellent.

It also depends on the brand of probiotics that a patient uses as to the quantity. The greater the variety and more specific the strains of live cultures for borrellia and company, the better, of course.

I've often thought of doubling my procbiotic dose to 70 billion cfru..but cost, everything is so costly.

Probiotics are a must and I wish I had been taking a quality one before LD ever hit...I was taking one, but not of good quality in my opinion...until later after diagnosis and treatment began.

I found an interesting article too regarding HIV and probiotics. Regarding T cells and viral infection, the following quote is from this link: http://www.scienceagogo.com/news/200606 ... _sys.shtml

Quote:
Gut-associated lymphoid tissue accounts for 70 percent of the body's immune system and should be a priority target for HIV treatments, claim University of California (UC) researchers. (Later in artcile) "If we are able to restore the gut's immune response, the patient will be more likely to clear the virus. You can't treat any infectious disease without the help of the immune system," concluded Prindiville.

That amazes me that is should be a priority in the treatment of HIV. Also the quote - Wow!
