Dear, guys I am up to 1800.00 a month in abx costs. Bicillin and Azithromycin. Plus the other protocol of supplements is another 600.00 or so. I was wondering if anyone had any info on this.

I'm so proud of you that you're getting these down (and in).

Sucks on the wallet though. I have no idea about Canada. :iv:

Michelle,
I am starting back on Bicillin tomorrow, for me 1/2 the dose is just as good as the full dose as far as LA goes.

I don't know for sure if Canada even carries Bicillin, I have heard they do and then some say they don't. I just don't know.

Believe it or not (being in California) in Mexico Bicillin is $5 (five bucks!) per shot! It doesn't come prepackaged in syringes ready to go, you have to reconstitute the powder with the the liquid that comes w/it. But it is Bicllin LA made by Sandoz, which is a huge pharmaceutical company all over the world. Well guess that doesn't help much since you aren't near the Mexican border.

Other countries are not bound by U.S. patent laws therefore they can get generics. Bicillin LA here may never be generic, I understand they patented it in the 50's when there were no limits on length of patents...basically they own it forever.

However......Bicillin CR's 1,200,000 mu shot contains 900,000 mu's of long acting bicillin called PENICILLIN G BENZATHINE w/ 300,000 PENICILLIN G PROCAINE. Both are hydrolyzed to penicillin G.

This tells us fairly plainly that CR starts off slightly stronger, since it has a low solubility and at day 7 is the same units per mL (in the blood) that LA is! Depending on strength of either CR or LA, the shots last from 4-14 days or longer the higher the dose.

Some would kick me in the rear for saying this, but there isn't much difference between LA and CR, EXCEPT PRICE!!
Trust me, I've studied this in depth. You could print the following info and present it to your LLMD and ask for Bicillin CR, which I believe does have a generic and if not, is absolutely cheaper. I actually used both CR and LA shots - they worked the same in my opinion. In fact CR was responsible for shooting my CD57 from 48 to 158, they did some major killing. Below are the difference's in CR and LA, show this to your LLMD and tell you him you want CR and see what he says, tell him it will save you $$$$. I honestly don't know if most doctor's understand there is little difference - LA lasts a little longer, but not much.

~~~~~~~~~~
Here is an simple description of both Bicillin CR and Bicillin LA, note theY read almost exactly the same:
Bicillin CR
"Penicillin G benzathine and penicillin G procaine have a low solubility and, thus, the drugs are slowly released from intramuscular injection sites. The drugs are hydrolyzed to penicillin G. This combination of hydrolysis and slow absorption results in blood serum levels much lower but more prolonged than other parenteral penicillin's. Intramuscular administration of 1,200,000 units of Bicillin C-R in adults usually produces peak blood levels of 2.1 to 2.6 units per mL within 3 hours; this level falls to an average concentration of 0.75 units per mL at 12 hours, 0.28 units per mL at 24 hours, and 0.04 units per mL at seven days
Bicillin L-A
"Penicillin G benzathine has an extremely low solubility and, thus, the drug is slowly released from intramuscular injection sites. The drug is hydrolyzed to penicillin G. This combination of hydrolysis and slow absorption results in blood serum levels much lower but much more prolonged than other parenteral penicillin's. Intramuscular administration of 300,000 units of penicillin G benzathine in adults results in blood levels of 0.03 - 0.05 units per mL, which are maintained for 4 to 5 days. Similar blood levels may persist for 10 days following administration of 600,000 units and for 14 days following administration of 1,200,000 units." Michelle, Did you say you are going on oral Zithro w/ Bicillin????? If that is true, I would not increase my Bicillin dose until you see how you do on oral Zith w/Bicillin for a month. 2 shots per week is normal, w/some other abx like Biaxin or Zith. 4 shots and Zith can be very potent. Zith is a strong abx - I love the macrolides, but if he is going to put you on 4 shots adding Zith as well could get rough.
But since it is getting expensive, I'd tell him you'd like to stay on 2 shots per week with zith for a month and see how you do.
Don't overload...don't add both Zith and 2 more shots at the same time, try the Zith first for a month or so. If you never added the other 2 shots, this combo is strong enough (my opinion - I am not a doctor) I only speak from experience.
I did Zithro one time, it was my first drug, I lasted 5 days...it was that strong. You likely will not need to add 2 more shots and that will save you $$$$$.
My favorite saying about Lyme, "The turtle wins the race, not the rabbit". Slow and steady is better than hard and fast in many cases because herxing can get severe.
Suggest it to your LLMD and see what he says.
Hugs,
Dana
