It is a false belief to think you are safe if you live an area that does NOT have deer.
Deer ticks are not the only carriers of Lyme disease and co-infections. Do not imagine that people who have homes that border forest's and open land are the only ones at risk, you are not safe in your suburban tract home! Do you have a lawn or does your neighbor? Do you have flowers, bushes or any vegetation on your property? Then you aren't safe if the answer is yes. Ticks love cool grass, short or tall, cool moist areas in general is what they seek out. They do not like direct sun.
Ticks feed off mice as well and many other creatures, whatever has blood running through them, ticks are after them! If you have a backyard with thick bushes, or tree's that are deciduous (lose their leaves) it is likely you have mice and ticks as well.
How many of us have caught a mouse in our garage..they are tick carriers.
Ticks feed on birds, reptiles and other living creatures, your cat, dog and you! Next time you see those beautiful birds land in your yard, they likely have ticks riding on them!
They love cool, damp areas of your yard. Leaves, under brush, etc. Some adult ticks are the size of the period at the end of this sentence.
Some very foolish, no idiotic, people have suggested getting rid of deer would control Lyme Disease, no..that is false. Ticks would simply find another animal to feed on. Getting rid of ticks would control lyme disease. The animals they feed on that means you too, don't want ticks on them anymore than you do, they certainly don't deserve to be killed, but the ticks do.
Some people think they need to get rid of their dogs and cats..NOOOOO!! This country has a huge over population of dogs and cats that shelters kill in the millions every year. Please do NOT get rid of your pets, they aren't the problem and they can be protected too.
If you have mice, trap them humanely, humane traps can be bought on Ebay cheaply. You never have to touch the mouse and simply let them go in a field. This is actually safer than killing mice, as when you kill them the ticks jump off and will likely remain in and around your home. Releasing a live mouse - they take the ticks with them.
I do not condone, recommend nor would I ever kill any animal small or large just because they may have ticks, ever! There are other ways to kill ticks and keep your yard & pets safe.
