My experience with Magnesium (facts, links and symptom deficiency lists below)

My study of mineral deficiencies has been the most interesting of all study I have done in all the years of studying Lyme and co-infections and the most promising to relieve most symptom's. My mineral study began on the obscure mineral Molbydenum and the importance it plays from detoxing everything from yeast die off to preservatives in foods, it was just the beginning. Minerals are so important to a human body that my Md said, "One mineral can change everything". I think of it as important as oil is for a car, a small part but it would seize up without it. I just didn't understand the importance and most people don't.

If you have had tests that show "normal" levels of magnesium or if you are thinking that you will have your doctor test your magnesium levels, know this now, most testing is not accurate. (more on testing below).

Magnesium IM or IV is such a potent relaxer it is used in hospitals for stopping labor contractions, heart attack, convulsions and seizures. It is the second most plentiful cation of the intracellular fluids. It is essential for approx. 300 enzyme transmissions and plays an important role with regard to neurochemical transmissions and muscular excitability. Everybody needs it and we do not get nearly enough of it from our diets.

There was a great uproar in the Lyme community several years ago that magnesium should be avoided because it could cause "bio-films". There were certain oral variations that were suspect. Some doctor's still tend to tell their lyme patients not to take magnesium and honestly, I can't help but wonder what they are thinking! Do they want you in treatment longer, what is the deal? Well, 2 of the countries most respected Lyme doctor's (one who wrote the book on lyme treatment) recommend that every lyme patient do IV or IM (injections) at least 3 times per week. There is no proof or truth to the magnesium / bio-film theory. If you want relief from symptoms, you will let that speculative theory go now.

I was diagnosed with Lyme and co-infections in 2006 and I have had pain levels that were so high and widespread, especially neuropathy (nerve pain) it nearly drove me to suicide. I never fully got it under control and I have learned it is amazing what you can learn to live with. Looking back, I really should have been "stabilized" by being put on Magnesium injections or IV immediately until my body was ready for the "hit" of antibiotics and even more pain and symptoms.

I have been prescribed many pain medications for years, everything from ibuprofen to morphine, none offered total pain relief. As most LLMd's will tell you, there isn't much pain relief for a lyme patient available. Disease pain is different than injury or surgery pain, disease pain reminds me of chasing a phantom...where exactly do you aim, how do you stop pain that is caused by bacteria flowing in your bloodstream? I suffered for years, seeking the perfect pain management protocol for Lyme Disease and settled on 4 helpful medications, but I wasn't aware yet of Magnesium.

It is fairly well known that the seasons of Spring and Fall for (unknown reasons) can flare Lyme to intolerable levels. In the spring of 2011 I had an intolerable flare of symptoms and I was willing to do anything for relief.

If you are a lyme sufferer who doesn't have much pain and has more cognitive issues, keep reading this is for you too. I have suffered at least 50+ symptoms of Lyme, too many to list here, just look at the list and most if not all I have experienced at some point. Yes, I have been tortured in every sense of the word. I suggested to my lyme doctor, Magnesium injections. I don't really know why, I knew very little but just enough about magnesium and its imperative health effect on the proper function of the nervous system. He prescribed it.

My first shot was sub-q (a shallow shot in the fat, not muscle) in the thigh and I could NOT believe the pain of this shot! It burned and felt like it was "floating" just beneath the skin "simmering" all day. But, something else happened, the nerve pain let up some.

I was impressed and scared. The shot hurt more than any shot I had ever had. But I have suffered so much pain that I am not one to let "acute" pain stop me, especially if the end result is better than the non-stop pain of lyme. There is some speculation that the injections will hurt less the heavier you are. More "cushion" in this instance, may actually be helpful in not feeling the pain so much.

I held off on the shots for several weeks. It hurt, it helped, I needed to know more. I decided to buy a book called "The Magnesium Miracle" by Carolyn Dean, MD. Although the author spoke mostly of oral and transdermal magnesium (I had been on oral magnesium 2 years that didn't help at all) the book was absolutely enlightening and explained in detail everything that magnesium was capable of helping in the body. I recommend this book to everyone whether chronically ill or not.

I learned that stress caused Magnesium deficiency and what is more stressful than chronic illness? I learned athletes are deficient due to the "good" stress they put on their bodies. In a nutshell, everyone is deficient. People cannot possibly get enough magnesium through your diet, that is fact and our bodies do not produce it.

I told my Md that shot was utterly painful and he said, "I don't have a patient that will do the shots because they do hurt so badly. Why don't you try oral or transdermal (skin applied) magensium?"

This wasn't an option for me. I had been on oral supplements of magnesium for 2 years and all it did was rip through my gut and cause bubbling and stomach distress. I don't believe for one moment my body absorbed any of it. Some people who take magnesium supplements believe that if their bowels are moving that magnesium is sufficient. The opposite is true, if your bowels are moving it is because magnesium is cleaning your clock so to speak and you aren't absorbing it at all. The following is a quote from an RN who believes transdermal magnesium is good way to go: "Most forms of magnesium taken orally are not absorbed very well. There is the problem of them causing diarrhea which is the single most limiting factor in getting enough magnesium in your system. Oral forms such as magnesium oxide and others are only absorbed at about 40% and it can take up to a year to raise magnesium levels to an adequate level".

So, I decided to try transdermal magnesium oil with no success at all, it changed nothing (please know that transdermal may or may not help you, everyone is different. Many Md's recommend transdermal Magnesium Chloride). I let my Md know I wanted to continue with the injections.

I spoke with a pharmacist and he told me to do the shots "IM" intermuscular, that was the real way to do the shot, not sub-q and that it may cause less pain (I have also learned taurine added helps with the pain of the shot. Taurine is available through compound pharmacies). I started IM immediately. I spoke with a well lymie who had done the injections and she told me to do the shots IM and only in the upper outer glute, like I did my Bicillin shots (near the hip). She told me in a month or so, I'd really notice a difference. So I tried it...and I can't tell you how much it hurt!!!!! But again, the nerve pain and my body calmed within hours...I had a choice, to suck it up and let it hurt and get some relief, or forget it!

My lyme doctor recommended lidocaine that could be drawn up into the syringe and would deaden the pain of the acid-feeling shots. Lidocaine was miraculous, I felt, NOTHING! But I also noticed now, I felt "strange" and the magnesium effect wasn't the same. I reported to my LLMd what I had experienced w/lidocaine in the mix. He agreed, lidocaine could make me feel "strange". I had a choice again...go it pain free with lidocaine, or "cowboy up" and go without the lidocaine and get the full effect of the magnesium. I chose to toss the lidocaine.

I was committed, I was in and if it hurt, so be it! And it did hurt, rocking, shocking pain those shots cause, I will not lie! Sometimes though I'd be lucky enough to hit a spot that didn't cause much pain, but not often enough.

After a month, wow, nearly EVERY symptom was being alleviated. I had noticed the following: Less nerve pain, no internal tremors, no heart palps, no muscle spasms or twitching, huge reduction in PMS symptoms, headaches, migraines, sleep, my mood was elevated (magnesium effects neurotransmitters responsible for mood) and night sweats RESOLVED...just to name a few. But an amazing surprise was with the ability to sweat in my infrared sauna! Yes, sweat, doesn't sound like a big deal, but is of the utmost importance when you have Lyme. I have an infrared sauna that I had used since 2009 that I would sit in to detox and but never really sweat. I loved it because it warmed my muscles penetrating deeply but I would only get "tacky" mildly damp feeling on my skin, I never really broke a sweat and never thought much of it. After about 6 weeks on Magnesium injections, I was sweating in the sauna like I should be, I was pouring sweat and that meant eliminating toxins and that helped too. Many people tell their story of their "inability to sweat" and you know what I am thinking, they are very likely magnesium deficient.

My LLMd was amazed. He said the effects of magnesium for me were amazing and he wished more of his patients would do it. I told him that their fear of the pain his patients were complaining about wasn't a good enough excuse not to do them, that simply told me they had nowhere experienced the pain / symptoms I had, because if a bullet to the leg daily would help me, I'd be firing the gun! I needed help, I got it!

I have spouted and shouted my Magnesium "miracle" all over Facebook, but I don't think many people really 'GET IT'!! I have probably lost friends because when someone asks what to do about a symptom, magnesium is my ONLY answer! This stuff is amazing and you can bet that if you are chronically ill, you are deficient andd even if you start magnesium today it can take MONTHS to get your cellular levels up to a normal level and even then you must keep replenishing magnesium regularly. Even healthy people are deficient including athletes. But chronically ill bodies must be starving for magnesium and our nervous systems messed up even more due to the deficiency, magnesium is most important for a stable nervous system.

Every single day I see Lyme patient reporting symptoms of anxiety, sleeplessness, pain, heart palps, muscle twitching, depression (and on and on) all of which magnesium can help or cure. I constantly repeat myself over and over "You are magnesium deficient!" It is like yelling at a group of lost people "this is the way, try this way!" but I can tell, few really believe anything could be so simple. Honestly, it probably just sounds too simple. People are thinking "I have lyme" this big bad bacteria that no one can cure and they aren't looking at all the damage lyme can cause. It depletes vitamins, minerals (ESSENTIAL for life), it damages everything in its path and people focus (and so did I for many years) ONLY on killing the bacteria. A full rounded treatment of lyme does not just mean killing bacteria day in and day out. Minerals must be replenished on a regular basis, toxins must be eliminated on a regular basis.

Magnesium may not cure you and it may not help the first time OR it might! It might takes months before you notice a big difference, so stay with it. Oral supplements are worth a try but for many will likely do nothing to help. But IV or IM long term could change everything as my LLMd said.

Testing:

I'd like to drive home the point that testing is unreliable for Magnesium..pretend I just wrote that 100 times! The best and most accurate test is to try it and stay on it to see how it helps you

If your doctor insists on testing, which is sort of funny to me, because there is no way you are getting enough magnesium through food, our bodies don't produce it and most likely you are literally burning deep stores of magnesium, it should be tried for 60 days, IM or IV. Dr.'s Burrascano and Klinghard recommend IV or IM magnesium 3 times per week w/Lyme treatment. I have heard that spectracell magnesium testing is a decent test because it tests cellular levels. Serum tests LIE..they are unreliable. The best tests are listed in the book "The Magnesium Miracle". But the best test in my opinion is to try it and see over time how much it helps you.
